MEET KATNISS
From a young age, Katniss Everdeen has faced challenge and adversity. The daughter of a miner and a doctor, she was born into one of the poorest Districts in Panem, doomed to a life of perpetual poverty. Her father died when she was but a young girl and after her mother suffered a mental breakdown, Katniss became the sole provider for her family. Her maturity and wisdom helped her family survive through the toughest of times and gave her a sense of duty that she carries with her to this day.
At the age of 16, her younger sister was chosen to participate in the yearly Hunger Games, a fight to the death among 12 children chosen by the all-powerful Capitol. Aware her sister faced almost certain death in the arena, Katniss volunteered in her place, an act considered suicide by all she knew. However, Katniss was determined to win and armed with her cunning, she became the victor of those Hunger Games. The next year, she was forced to participate in the second round of Hunger Games, but this time she sabotaged them and destroyed the arena, becoming a symbol of freedom for all who lived in her District and her nation of Panem.
She escaped the Capitol's clutches and joined an underground movement to overthrow the tyrannical system that favored those at the top and oppressed those at the bottom. Her heroic sacrifice and unmatched courage caused her to be selected as the "Mockingjay", an icon and symbol for the underground revolution, and she made countless speeches and appearances on the behalf of the revolution. When they stormed the Capitol, Katniss joined an elite squad of sharpshooters and penetrated the very center of the Capitol despite overwhelming resistance. Following the successful revolution, Katniss went back to a normal life. She still continues to this day to be an advocate for those who have no voice. After seeing the horrible wreck that America has become, she is calling for a political revolution.
